Procedural Party!
We celebrated our procedural party as the children invited other primary classes and instructed them on how to play games, make sandwiches, decorate cupcakes and make decorations. The children worked very hard and it was a great success to our unit on procedural writing! Photos to come courtesy of Mme Trott!

Un gros merci!
Thank you to all parents for coming in last week and this week for parent teacher interviews. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have ongoing questions and/or concerns by email, telephone or a quick chat after school. Your child's success is in large part due to your involvement. Thank you for your ongoing support!
A word on homework:
New in homework this month: the yellow folder!
The yellow folder is a book log that allows your child to record the books that he/she is reading at home. They are to write:
-the title
-the type of text (narrative, informative or poetry)
-the total number of pages in the book
-the number of pages they read
-the amount of time read (15 min)
-whether they would reccomend the books to fellow students
Looking forward:
Mathematics - we are reviewing how to create multiple graphs using the different formats:
-bar graph
-pictogram
Francais - we are reviewing how to read and write procedural text:
-recipes
-how to's
-direction manuals
Social Studies - we are looking at identifying the various regions of Canada:
-provinces
-territories
-types of terrain: tundra, Canadian shield, boreal/deciduous/coniferous forests, mountain ranges and prairies
Sciences - we are looking at the characteristics of water, particularly:
-buoyancy
-its cycle
-how to clean it using a filtration system
-what happens when it is polluted and its consequences (i.e. oil spills, acid rain)
Hope this helps!

ART CALENDARS FOR SALE! $15 and PIZZA LUNCH
Mme Demeter has prepared 2012 calendars featuring the art of our Clairlea students. They make great holiday gifts and funds will be used to continue to upkeep our superb Visual Arts program. They are only $15. All orders and money should be in by this Friday.
PIZZA LUNCH is tomorrow. If you are unsure whether or not you have sent in an order for your child, please err on the side of caution and send a lunch with your child as it is not guaranteed that there will be pizza leftover.
HALLOWEEN is this Monday, October 31. The children are invited to wear their costumes and have earned enough marbles to have a small party. If you would like to send treats for the party, we would be happy to accept them as long as they are nut and gelatin free.
If you do not celebrate Halloween, please let me know and we can arrange the day as to be respectful to your beliefs.
Thanks again for your support - if you have any questions/concerns at all I'd be happy to speak with you via telephone, email or in person :)
Take care!

Beyblade Blitz!

Please make sure that students keep Beyblades at home as one of our students has lost his Beyblades and it has become quite upsetting to search for Beyblades and also to lose them. Please ask your child if he/she has come across any items that do not belong to him/her at home and to return them to school immediately.
Thank you!

Les Suites qui manquent!
We are wrapping up our patterns unit and as a review, please take a look at this neat website of math games for reviewing concepts at Les jeux de Lulu le lutin malin. http://jeux.lulu.pagesperso-orange.fr/menu.htm
Please choose the flowers icon to create repeating patterns.
Please choose the fruits icon to continue repeating patterns.
Please choose the circle and trapeze icon to create more complicated repeating patterns.
You can also access this website where it says, "Les Suites!" under the links tab at the left.
Enjoy!
Hope this helps,
Mme Dungo

October!
What a whirlwind September has been! Just a few updates:
Thank you to all of your donations for Terry Fox, if you still have pledge sheets please forward them to the school as soon as possible.
Everyone looked impeccable on our picture day! Look out for the proofs later this month or early next month.
Scholastic is due October 13th for both the September and October Scholastic orders. Those who have handed them in already, the shipments are on their way!
Just a reminder that we now have a RED folder for language homework and a BLACK folder for math homework and classwork. They are always due FRIDAY along with our spelling test. The spelling test will always be the two sentences in the language folder as well as 5-6 words written in their agenda on Monday.
In Mathematics we are ending our Patterning Unit and starting on Number Sense, specifically place value up to the hundreds.
In Science we have started our study on Air and its properties, ask your child about our feather experiment yesterday :)
In Language, we continue to explore what it means to pick out the perfect book, reviewing our reading strategies of an unknown word (re-read, pick out the little word in the big word, using our English, reading before and after a word) as we are honing in on comprehension of text in addition to decoding the sounds.
In Social Studies, we continue to map, map, map! Expose your child to all sorts of maps with legends and symbols. A fun map of their room, their home or their favourite park might be a great activity at home to do to reinforce their use of legends and symbols.
Stay tuned for photos!
Hope this helps,
Mme Dungo
