Odds and Ends Please....And Volunteers!

We are currently searching for donations of different types of materials: i.e. toilet paper rolls, popsicle sticks, cardboard boxes, rinsed out aluminum cans and plastic/glass bottles, styrofoam trays and the list goes on and on! Our end task is to take what we know about our materials and to apply it in designing and constructing an egg carrier that we will drop (egg included) from our second story staircase. Designs are already underway and we look forward to "the big drop" as we practice the scientific method leading us into our Structures Scientist in the School visit on the morning of Wednesday, February 3. We invite parents to come in and act as volunteers for that morning. Please let me know! Merci beaucoup!

Family Literacy Night: Thursday, January 28

Please remember to come by the school as we are having our Family Literacy Night from 6:30-7:30 pm. Our theme is the reading comprehension strategy of making inferences: searching for the author's message using evidence from the text (actions of characters, emotions, words) and the reader's personal experiences. Complicated and confusing? Come out tomorrow night for live demonstrations of inferencing lessons in the classroom.... and door prizes! Our demonstration will be in Room 111, Mme Volokhova's class. Hope to see you there and bring your thinking caps, you will be the students!

Felicitations a Nicholas et Habeebah!

In recognition of their efforts as team players, Nicholas and Habeebah have been awarded certificates at our Character Education Assembly yesterday. This month's character trait was Teamwork. "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." -Henry Ford Bravo les enfants!

Word wall words, "avoir" and homework

Our homework for the week is in our dark blue folders. They are due on Friday. We are applying how the verb, "avoir" in present tense can be used in every day language and reviewing our high frequency words: c'est, ses, aprѐs, et, est, mais and mes. Please note: Our dictee test each Friday is marked on a rubric system according to levels. There are 4-5 sentences and the work as a whole is given a level in each of the following categories: spelling of the high frequency words, punctuation, and verb tense.

Science:
We are exploring Matter and Materials. We've been conducting experiments in order to determine the function of different materials and how they're used every day. In our latest experiment we explored the processes of a chemical change. We hypothesized, observed and recorded our results using.... pizza! Yum! Please look at, find and describe every day objects and discuss how the properties of these materials help them achieve their job, i.e. a chair needs a material that is durable and strong to withold weight, thus we use wood.

Book Bags!
On lit! The students have a book bag containing two books: one of their choice, the other at their reading level. Daily practice at home will surely benefit these excited readers. Please see information sheet in our book folder for more details.

Mathematics:
The search for the areas of different objects around the class has begun! We have compared and debated the use of standard and non-standard units of measure as we measure our shoes, markers, computers, desks and even each other! Please review perimetre and area and their differences.

Bienvenue!
